the artificial stands now being used for labora­ tory study were planted in i912 under the guid­ ance sponsorship of paul himself with forester john harding of the then conservation commis­ sion consulting, the stands were not cultured until 1951 when the present regime of thinnings was started and has been continued and ex­ panded since, younger stands established on abandoned, cutover, and burned lands, since the start of the college, have now grown to the condition of crown closure where they are in need of thinning also, pruning of a relatively few select stems per acre is carried out to insure a maximum yield of high quality timber. one permanent recoru-report is produced at each five year operation which is added to the accumu­ lated record of the past, this report alone is a tre­ mendous compendium of the students efforts, but the most real and vibrant accomplishment seem­ ingly is the students persistent impression of what went on during this exercise, invariably upon a re­ turn visit to the college ... a new wife in tow ... or wife and offspring ... he will want to “ review\ his plot; a living, growing, and enduring expression of his knowledge gained at paul sm ith's. sylviculture ecology 200
