Paul Smith’s Hotel was completely destroyed by fire on the morning of June 27, 1962 . . . Back of this simple statement of fact lies a multitude of losses, both economic and emo tional. This was not the first Paul Smith's Hotel built in 1858. Actually, it was the second, a part of which had been constructed for the home of Apollos A. Smith about 1890, and was known then as the Smith Cottage. After the original hotel burned in 1930, this Smith Cot tage was considerably enlarged and remodeled to become the Paul Smith's Hotel, within the memory of the College. An explosion at about 5:30 A.M. on the morning of June 27th alerted the occupants and allowed them to escape the fire without in jury. Summer school was in session and several students, also aroused by the explosion, were able to assist Dr. Buxton and Mr. Longtin in saving some of the recordsHnd files. As a re sult practically all of the student records were saved, but most of Mr. Longtin's prized pos sessions were lost, for the fire came early to his part of the building. Everything else was a total loss. Q Photot 01 anti } by BoMm IImw and jo Wilkn Photo t»lo» by B*iry Tindall
