R 29007 FORWARD On a typical, peaceful, Sunday morning Paul Smith's students were abruptly startled from their sleep by shrill cries o f \FIRE! FIRE!” It was A p ril 27, 1952, a memorable day though not a happy one. A day that saw $150,000 dollars w o rth o f buildings and property belonging to the College go up in flames. First only smoke was discovered pour ing out of the roof of the Rec Hall, but soon reddish orange flames hurtled skyward and fille d the air w ith the smell o f burning wood. During the next few hours the students, faculty members and volunteer firemen joined forces to figh t the fire, and save w h a t littie equipment and materials they could before the buildings were entirely engulfed in flames. The holocaust raged onward fo r more than three hours. When it receded, all that re mained o f the 25 0 -fo o t building that housed the gymnasium, recreational hall, forestry rooms, snack bar, ski shop, and various offices and storerooms was a charred pile o f burned wood and twisted steel. 2
