Address
Congressman
Robert
McEwen
delivered
the
graduation
address
at
Paul
Smith’s
College
in
a
packed
Buxton
Gymnasium.
In
addressing
the
graduates,
the
Representative
from
the
31st
Congressional
Dis
trict
centered
his
talk
on
the
American
system
and
the
place
youth
will
have
in
it.
He
said,
“
Don’t
sell
the
American
system
short
.
.
.
ask
anyone
who
attacks
it
to
show
you
one
better.”
He
also
noted
that
it
is
our
competit
ive
society
and
industry
which
had
a
great
part
in
the
making
of
Paul
Smith’s
College.
“
Our
society
has
given
us
more
goods
and
services,
including
this
very
college”
,
he
said.
The
Congressman
went
on
to
trace
the
biography
of
Paul
Smith
—
who
came
into
the
Adirond-
dacks,
started
a
small
lodge
for
hunters
and
fishermen,
expanded
upon
that,
acquiring
lands
for
cot
tage
sites.
“
He
realized
there
was
a
need
for
materials,
and
went
into
the
businss
of
providing
the
same,
as
well
as
starting
an
elec
tric
railway
and
generator
station.
He
was
a
self-made
man,
helped
by
a
good
wife,
who
did
the
cook
ing.
A
perfect
example
of
a
man
succeeding
in
the
American
free
enterprise
system.”
He
concluded,
“
The
career
of
Paul
Smith,
like
the
history
of
this
nation,
is
a
lesson
in
the
advantages
of
liberty,
equality
of
opportunity,
